Haikou Meilan International Airport, located in Lingshan Town, Meilan District, Haikou City, Hainan Province, officially commenced operations on May 25, 1999. It is one of China's important domestic trunk airports. The airport's buildings and landscaping feature strong tropical scenery while skillfully incorporating the essence of traditional Chinese garden design, creating a pleasant environment. It is acclaimed as China's first ecological garden airport.
The airport covers an area of 1,140 hectares, with an airfield rated at Class 4E. The runway is 3,600 meters long and 45 meters wide; the parallel taxiway is 3,600 meters long and 23 meters wide, capable of meeting the full-weight takeoff and landing requirements of large aircraft such as the Boeing 747-400.
The Phase II expansion project of Meilan Airport includes a newly constructed airfield with a Class 4F rating; a new 3,600-meter runway, two parallel taxiways, and a taxiway connector system; a new 296,000-square-meter Terminal 2 (T2), aprons with 61 aircraft stands, and a GTC (Comprehensive Transportation Hub) project. The project is designed to meet the demand of handling 35 million passengers and 400,000 tons of cargo and mail annually by 2025. Construction began on November 18, 2015, and was completed by the end of 2019.
