Nanjing Lukou International Airport is located in Lüke Subdistrict, Jiangning District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. It serves as the gateway to Nanjing, the second-largest city in East China, and is the third-largest international airport in the region. It is a major trunk airport in China, a primary cargo airport in East China, and serves as an alternate airport for both Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport. Ranked among China's large airports with annual passenger traffic exceeding ten million, Lukou Airport ranked first in cargo and mail throughput growth and second in passenger throughput growth among major and medium-sized airports in East China. It is a major hub airport in China, a national center for air cargo and express parcel distribution, and a national regional transportation hub.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport officially broke ground on February 28, 1995, and commenced operations on July 1, 1997, the day Hong Kong returned to China. On November 18 of the same year, it was approved by the State Council to open to foreign-registered aircraft. The airport currently has one runway 3,600 meters long and 60 meters wide, and one taxiway 3,600 meters long and 45 meters wide, capable of accommodating fully loaded takeoffs and landings of all types of transport aircraft in the world. The terminal building covers an area of 132,000 square meters. The airport's cargo warehouse has an indoor area of 6,700 square meters and an outdoor area of 45,000 square meters. The apron covers 457,000 square meters, including a 70,000-square-meter cargo apron. Currently, the airport operates 85 routes connecting 48 domestic and international cities.
Since 2009, Beijing Jinghang'an Airport Engineering Co., Ltd. has undertaken the apron lighting and airfield lighting projects for the apron expansion at Nanjing Lukou International Airport. In 2012, it undertook the first lot of the information and low-voltage systems for the airport's Phase II project, and in 2013, it undertook the airfield lighting project for the Phase II flight area. The T2 terminal project won the Nanjing Municipal Construction Project "Jinling Cup" Award for Quality Engineering in 2015. In 2017, the intelligent building system of the Phase II terminal was awarded the "China Construction Engineering Luban Award (National Quality Project)" for 2016-2017 by the China Construction Industry Association.
